How is WPM calculated?
WPM (words per minute) is calculated using the standard formula: total characters typed divided by 5 (one "word" = 5 characters), divided by the elapsed time in minutes. This is the industry-standard method used by most typing tests.
What is SwiftType Pro and how do I unlock it?
SwiftType Pro is a one-time $2.99 purchase that unlocks additional test durations (15s), Hard difficulty mode, extra word sets (Tech, Quotes, Numbers), unlimited test history, progress charts, and a keyboard error heatmap. Tap any locked feature to see the upgrade prompt.
How do I restore my Pro purchase on a new device?
Open SwiftType, go to Settings, and tap "Restore Purchases." Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used when you originally purchased Pro.
Why can't I backspace to a previous word?
This is intentional — it matches how professional typing tests work. Once you advance past a word (by pressing space), you can't go back. This keeps your WPM measurement accurate and consistent.
Is my typing data shared or uploaded anywhere?
No. All your test results and data stay entirely on your device. SwiftType does not have a backend or user accounts. Nothing you type is ever transmitted or stored externally.
How do I delete my data?
Go to Settings in the app and tap "Reset All Data." This will permanently delete all saved test results, streaks, and personal bests from your device. This action cannot be undone.
The app isn't responding / crashing — what do I do?
Try force-quitting the app and reopening it. If the issue persists, make sure you're on the latest version (check the App Store for updates). If you're still having trouble, email us with your iOS version and device model.
